Parental Rights

Parents Have the Power at GCSI

Garfield County School of Innovation is a tuition-free public charter. Parents are the primary educators. The school works for the family — not around it. Here is the school's commitment, grounded in Colorado statute and United States precedent Mahmoud v. Taylor, 606 U.S. 522 (2025).

What you can expect

GCSI will not offer comprehensive human sexuality education. There will be no 3Rs course and no human-sexuality unit. This is our charter commitment, allowed by C.R.S. § 22-1-128(6).

1. You will see what is taught.

Books, syllabi, videos, surveys, assemblies, and supplemental materials are available for review. If something new on a sensitive topic is added mid-year, you hear about it before your child does.

2. GCSI will not run those surveys.

GCSI will not administer student surveys about sexuality, gender identity, sexual behavior, religion, or family political beliefs.

3. Because GCSI will not run a human-sexuality course, the statutory CHSE opt-out will rarely be needed.

If any other instruction or material implicates sexuality or gender identity, the Supreme Court in Mahmoud held that public schools may not refuse notice and opt-out when that instruction undermines the religious upbringing parents have a right to direct. GCSI will honor written opt-outs and give the student other academic work. Renew the letter each school year.

4. The school will not hide your child from you.

Staff will not socially transition a student — a different name or pronouns at school — without the parent's prior written consent. We will not keep two sets of facts, one for the family and one for the hallway.

5. Privacy in facilities.

Restrooms, locker rooms, and overnight rooms are designated by biological sex.

Parents in Control in Colorado

GCSI will rely on the legal guidance of Alliance Defending Freedom for protecting Parental Rights.

Most parents send their children to school with basic expectations—that schools will teach academics and keep parents informed.

Yet across the country, many families are discovering that important decisions about curriculum, surveys, and student policies are being made without their knowledge or consent. In some cases, parents have been surprised by lessons or policies they were never told about, raising real concerns for their families.

This guide is designed to help parents understand their rights, what schools should be communicating, and when a school may be crossing a legal line.
